The Transformative Power of Women’s Leadership: Lessons from Rwanda

In 2003, Rwanda’s newly passed constitution declared that the country was committed to “equality between men and women” and decreed that women should hold at least thirty percent of parliamentary seats. Today, a larger percentage of women (61%) serve in parliament in Rwanda than in any other country in the world.  Rwandan women are leaders not only in government but in business and all sectors of society and the economy.  In this session, opened by Erika James, Dean of the Wharton School, Wharton Professor Katherine Klein will be joined by Professor Agnes Binagwaho, MD, M(Ped), PHD, former Minister of Health, Vice Chancellor, University of Global Health Equity, Dr. Diane Karusisi, CEO, Bank of Kigali, and Kampeta Sayinzoga, CEO, Development Bank of Rwanda Plc., to discuss their extraordinary accomplishments, the on-going path to gender equality, and lessons for women’s leadership in Rwanda and the world. The session will close with Q&A from the audience.
