Changing of the Guard.

As of August 1, Tom Hadlock, WG’66, has retired from his position as chair of the Wharton Graduate Emeritus Society (WGES).

Tom is now chairman emeritus of WGES.

While serving as chair for 12 years, Tom has done a fine job spurring growth, creativity, and coordination while fielding a leadership committee of 20 members.

McClain Gordon, WG’73, will assume the duties of WGES chair. McClain has led the Crandall Challenge committee for five years and has been a pivotal leader of WGES, along with Tom, for many years. McClain graduated from Vanderbilt University and now resides in Memphis, TN.

Carl Shaifer, WG57

One of the original founders and chairs of WGES passed away in March. He was what our generation would call a “Renaissance man.” His devotion to Wharton and WGES was exceeded only by his pride in residing in Philadelphia, the city where the greatest democracy in the world was founded. Among other talents, Carl was a poet. He was also a champion wrestler at Princeton, where he received his undergraduate degree, and remained athletic throughout his life.

Above all, Carl was a warm, energetic friend to everyone he associated with — or simply met. The details of his life and community activities can be found below.
